Burlington, Vt., June 2, 2022 – Today, Vermont Green Football Club announced a partnership with the Vermont State Labor Council, AFL-CIO to support each other’s work in the community. This partnership affirms the relationship between the club and organizations that promote social and economic justice.
Vermont Green Football Club (VGFC) is a new men’s soccer club in Burlington kicking off its inaugural season this summer. VGFC will compete in United Soccer Leagues (USL) League Two and play their home matches at the University of Vermont’s Virtue Field.
VGFC is embarking on an ambitious mission to build a club that embeds environmental justice in its competitive strategy, operational processes, and culture.
Fundamental to environmental justice are social and economic justice, of which the labor movement has long been a leader. VGFC General Manager Connor Tobin was on the Organizing and Bargaining Committees for the formation of the United Soccer League Player Association (USLPA).
“Players have won significant increases in their wages in their recently won first contract,” said Tobin. “This increase means that players can now pursue their passion without living in poverty. Taking care of each other is really the starting point for taking care of the planet.”
VGFC sits just under these professional leagues. The players for VGFC are predominantly top-end college players who have aspirations of making the jump to the professional ranks. VGFC aims to provide an experience that prepares these players for life as professional players, which includes understanding their value and rights as a professional player.
To kick-off this first-ever in the world of sports teams partnerships, there will be a Labor Night to celebrate the solidarity between athletes and workers, as well solidarity with all living beings on our shared planet.
Labor Night will take place on Wednesday, July 13th at 7pm at the UVM Virtue Field.
